We have all heard of antioxidants. They help our bodies get rid of cancer-causing free radicals and contribute to our overall health. We simply cannot expect to be healthy in today’s polluted world without some help of antioxidants. By carefully selecting supplements and food, we can protect our bodies from oxidative damage and slow down the aging process. In the battle of anti – O’s vs. free radicals, one player stands out without a doubt. The most important warrior you can recruit to aid your health is Glutathione.
Glutathione is often referred to as the master antioxidant because it recycles antioxidants. If you maintain a healthy level of glutathione, it allows you to finally get rid of the free radicals from the body completely and regenerates itself for the next use. Unlike any other antioxidant, Glutathione never becomes a free radical and instead regenerates to serve our body as much as needed. All the unwanted garbage gets attached to the glutathione molecules and is carried out as waste. This process is crucial in any cleansing mission or just for daily detoxification. Glutathione or GSH reduces inflammation, increases the strength of your immune system, and has many more benefits as long as the levels in the body are maintained. Of course, with age and stress, these levels become greatly depleted. Researchers find the highest levels of this protective substance in young people and the lowest in elderly. Chronically ill people are often deficient and could benefit greatly from the supplementation.
Ways to increase levels of Glutathione vary. Eating cruciferous vegetables, like broccoli or kale, help. You can also supplement through bioactive whey protein or lyposomal-delivered GSH supplements like Lypo-Spheric GSH. It is very difficult for our bodies to absorb this supplement but that is where scientists became creative. The liposome “vessels” that deliver the supplement are made up of cell membranes themselves so it makes it possible to transfer molecules and actually absorb the valuable GSH! Another bioavailable way of increasing glutathione is supplementing with acetyl glutathione. Unfortunately, the cost of these new research technologies has transferred to the relatively high cost of the product. Nevertheless, it is crucial and required for anyone who is suffering from illness. These supplements are used in emergency rooms to prevent lethal toxicity. There are also many others, including myself, who are simply on a mission to find the most beneficial substances for us on this planet. I may be in great health now, but I want to give my body the best chance as years go by, considering how polluted our environment is and how contaminated our food sources are. Other ways to increase GSH levels include regular exercise and alpha lipoic acid and selenium supplementation.
Here is a nice study that shows how GSH protects against oxidation following a high glucose intake.
Some of the reported and researched health benefits include:
- increases in energy level
- slows the aging process
- reduces muscle and joint pain
- strengths the immune system
- detoxifies the liver and cells
- improves mental focus
- improves quality of sleep
- improves skin
- accelerates athletic performance and recovery
- neutralizes heavy metals
Because of the high cost of this particular product, it may not be attractive to a person in good health. The benefit for a sick person, however, is priceless. If you or someone you know is seriously sick, it is well worth investing into this product, as well as some other natural non-prescribed remedies. In the future, I will cover CBD cannabidiol supplements which are truly the Holy Grail of medicine derived from plants. We can heal ourselves even from serious ailments if we utilize our own intelligence to seek out knowledge and apply it.
